About 108 Sai Ashtottara Namavali Bhagwan has come to cleanse, confirm and correct the faith of mankind in truth, virtue, beauty and goodness. He is all Gods in one. He hears all prayers of man and beast; in all languages and all climes. This string of 108 precious Gems (Names) each reflecting His glory and His compassion, was born out of the need to reveal the depth of that compassion and the magnificence of that Glory. Each of the 108 Names is a wondrous window that sheds light and grants vision. The 108 Names here are given of the 1008 that are current do not and cannot exhaust the glory of Baba, which is too magnificently mysterious to be caught in words. He answers to any Name, whether it is lisped, or mispronounced, or crude or meaningless, provided the call comes from a yearning heart. He is so nearby that He can hear us sigh or groan or pray in the silence of the heart. Baba says that a string of 108 or 1008 Names is prescribed in the scriptures not because the Lord is pleased when praised long and loud. The number is recommended because there is just a chance that we will utter at least one name out of 108 or 1008 with the sincere feeling of yearning and the Lord who is ever alert to respond to sincerity will hear - that one and bless. Kasturi's "Garland of Precious Gems" Why 108 names? - The Significance Numbers 18, 108, 1008 and 100008 are all multiples of 9 which is a mystic Number. All multiples of 9 added together ultimately become number 9. This can be verified. (16*9=144; 1+4+4+=9). The mystic Number 9 is arrived at in this way: Thus this three times three making nine has become a mystic number. It exhausts the definition of the phenomenal universe. So 9 is also called as Para Brahman. 9 are called 'Daiva Sankhya' or 'Parabrahma Sankhya'. Twelve is the number of 'Adityas' (Sun) or luminescence that reveal the objective world of Name and Form, of manifoldness and seeming variety, the fleeting pictures! Adityas represent each sect of Zodiac. Aditya also means a part of the sun that faces the earth at a time. 9 are the screen on which these picture appears because 9 are immutable. It is 'Parabrahma Sankhya' Multiples of 9 Parabrahmas with 12 Adityas become 108 i.e. when we say 108 names we are covering and remembering and respecting all aspects of this universe. This is why we chant 108-neither less nor more. Sai Ashtottara - Efficacy of Nama - Smarana Words have tremendous power. They can arouse emotion and they can also calm them. They direct or infuriate, they reveal or confuse. They are potent forcesthat bring up great reserves of strength and wisdom. The tongue should be used for pronouncing the name of the Lord. It should not be used to be like a serpent or growl or roar with intention to strike terror. That is not the purpose for which the tongue is granted to man. Dwell on the name, and its sweetness will saturate your tongue and improve your taste. Speech is so powerful that it indicates one's character, reveals one's personality, educates others and communicates experience and information. So be vigilant about words. Slip while walking, the injury can be repaired; but slip while talking, the injury cannot be repaired. The present age is described in the scriptures as very conducive to liberation for, while in past ages. Rigorous penance was prescribed as the means, the present Kali Age requires only Nama-Smarana to win liberation. When the name of the Lord is remembered with all the glory that is associated with it, a great flood of happiness swells up within the mind. The Lord is full of bliss and in fact He is Bliss itself. All the Bliss is to be tasted through the name. Vyasa himself knew this for when some Sages once went to him to find out which yoga is most conducive to success in man's efforts for liberation, Vyasa anticipated this question and repeated to himself aloud, "How fortunate are those destined to be born in Kali Yuga; it is so easy to win the grace of Lord by 'nama-smarana in the Kali age". Nama means Name and Smarana is incessant remembrance. But in general it is used for repetition of the Name of God. The name of God, if recited with love and faith, has the power to bring upon the eager aspirant the grace of God. |
