SIGNIFICANCE OF AARTI

Aarti is a part of a Hindu worship. A tray of five lighted Aarti lamps, or camphor is waved in a circular movement in front of Bhagwan. Worshippers hold their hands towards the lamps and then touch their faces to absorb the blessings. Light dispels darkness and also surges upward and thereby stands for auspicious power. The word Aarati means Atma + Rati. In olden days, the blaze of the waving light revealed the Deity in Sanctum Sanctorum of the temple.

It is symbolic of the "Jnananadeep" which illumines and manifests the Divinity within the devotee's heart (Hridaya).

Hridaya - It means hrudi (in the heart). Ayam (He) The seat of God, where Lord Shiva is installed, the niche where the lamp of jnana is lit.

The light is made by burning three cotton wicks dipped in ghee or oil. It symbolize an attempt on behalf of the devotee to annihilate the sense of "I" which he associates with Prakriti which is governed by the three gunas, Sattwa, Rajas and Tamas.

Camphor is also burnt. Camphor burns without a trace of it left. It signifies the burning of Ego, without a trace in the flame of consciousness.

Significance of Aarti song

Aarati symbolizes illumination of the spirit. That is why it is done at the end of worship, Bhajan etc. With a burning lamp of camphor. The flame is waved before the image of God to signify that the prayer was dedicated to the achievement of illumination.

The word Aarati means 'Atma-rati', the longing of the individual Atma for Universal Atma or Paramatma. It also means the merging of the 'Atmajyoti' in the 'Akhanda Jyoti'.

When camphor and fire meet, there is no remainder or residue. The person who waves the flame has to pray in his mind, "Even so, my Lord, let all the impurities in me be burnt away, and let there be no residue left for me to work out in the coming days".

Loka Samasta Sukhino Bhavantu
May all the beings in this world be happy?
(All Sathya Sai Baba meetings end with the above chanting)
