Bhakthi is governed by three qualities, namely:

  1. Sattvic - to please God and to destroy one's attachment to the senses.
  2. Rajasic - to get wealth, fame and property.
  3. Tamasic - to worship with a desire for the destruction of the enemy and to get success through unlawful means.

In the Bhagvat Gita the Lord says:

"Four types of virtuous mean worship Me, Arjuna - the seeker of worldly objects, the sufferer, the seeker of Knowledge and the man of wisdom".

"Of these, the best is the man of wisdom, ever established with me and possessed of exclusive devotion. For I am extremely dear to the wise man (who knows Me in reality) and he is extremely dear to Me".

A devotees starts from fine emotions, which develops into warm affection and then into Glowing love and ultimately into supreme and unbounded love. When a devotee advances in devotion to the Lord, he sheds tears of delight. He may cry or laugh. He may sign or dance in Divine Ecstasy. When devotion matures, it brings Jnana (Wisdom) to the devotee. The Bhaktha is also a jnani. It is only at the time of intense devotion and love that the mind becomes void and free from the past.
