bhuya eva maha-baho
srnu me paramam vacah
yat te 'ham priyamanaya
vaks yami hita-kamyaya

The Blessed Lord said:

1. Once again, O mighty-armed, listen to My supreme word. Because you are My dear friend, out of a desire to do you good I shall speak to you further, giving knowledge that is better than what I have already explained.

na me viduh sura-ganah
prabhavam na maharsayah
aham adir hi devanam
maharsinam ca sarvasah

2. Neither the hosts of Devas [demigods] nor the great Rishis [sages] know My origin; for in every respect I am the source of the Devas and the great Rishis.

yo mam ajam anadim ca
vetti loka-mahesvaram
asammudhah sa martyesu
sarva-papaih pramucyate

3. He who knows Me as the unborn and as the beginning less, as the Great Lord of all the worlds, he among mortals is undeluded and freed from all sins.

buddhir jnanam asammohah
ksama satyam damah samah
sukham duhkham bhavo 'bhavo
bhayam cabhayam eva ca

4. Intellect, wisdom, non-delusion, patience, truth, self-restraint, calmness, pleasure, pain, birth, death, fear and fearlessness.

ahimsa samata tustis
tapo danam yaso 'yasah
bhavanti bhava bhutanam
matta eva prthag-vidhah

5. Non-violence, equanimity, contentment, austerity, charity, fame and infamy - these different qualities of beings are created by Me alone.

maharsayah sapta purve
catvaro manavas tatha
mad-bhava manasajata
yesam loka imah prajah

6. The seven great Rishis [sages] and the four ancient Manus [progenitors of mankind], endowed with My power, were born from My mind; and from them have come forth all the creatures in the world.

etam vibhutim yogam ca
mama yo vetti tattvatah
so vikalpena yogena
yujyate natra samsayah

7. He who knows in truth this glory and power of Mine is endowed with unfaltering yoga [unalloyed devotional service]; of this there is no doubt.

aham sarvasya prabhavo
mattah sarvam pravartate
iti matva bhajante mam
budha bhava-samanvitah

8. I am the origin of all; from Me all things evolve. The wise know this and adore Me with all their heart.

mac-citta mad-gata-prana
bodhayantah parasparam
kathayantas ca mam nityam
tusyanti ca ramanti ca

9. With their minds fixed on Me, with their life fully devoted to My service, enlightening each other and ever speaking of Me, they are contented and delighted [derive great satisfaction and bliss].

tesam satata-yuktanam
bhajatam priti-purvakam
dadami buddhi-yogam tam
yena mam upayanti te

10. To those, ever devout, worshipping Me with love, I give the yoga of discrimination by which they can come to Me.

tesam evanukampartham
aham ajnana-jam tamah
nasayamy atma-bhava-stho
jnana-dipena bhasvata

11. Out of pure compassion for them, dwelling in their hearts, I destroy the ignorance-born darkness, by the luminous lamp of wisdom.

arjuna uvaca

param brahma param dhama
pavitram paramam bhavan
purusam sasvatam divyam
adi-devam ajam vibhum

Arjuna said:

12. You are the Supreme Brahman, the Supreme Abode, the Supreme Purifier, the Eternal, Divine Purusha, the Primeval Deity, the Unborn, and the Omnipresent.

ahus tvam rsayah sarve
devarsir naradas tatha
asito devalo vyasah
svayam caiva bravisi m

13. All the Rishis have thus acclaimed You, as also the Deva Rishi Narada; so also Asita, Devala and Vyasa; and now You Yourself say it to me.

sarvam etad rtam manye
yan mam vadasi kesava
na hi te bhagavan vyaktim
vidur deva na danavah

14. I totally accept as truth, all that You say to me, O Kesava. Neither the Devas [demigods] nor the Danavas [demons], O Lord, know verily Your Manifestation [personality].

svayam evatmanatmanam
vettha tvam purusottama
bhuta-bhavana bhutesa
deva-deva jagat-pate

15. Indeed You alone know Yourself by Yourself, O Purushottama [Supreme Person], O Source of beings, O Lord of beings, O God of gods, O Lord of the universe.

vaktum arhasy asesena
divya hy atma-vibhutayah
yabhir vibhutibhir lokan
imams tvam vyapya tisthasi

16. Please tell me in detail of Your divine glories, by which glories You pervade all these worlds.

katham vidyam aham yogims
tvam sada paricintayan
kesu kesu ca bhavesu
cintyo 'si bhagavan maya

17. How shall I constantly think of You, O Yogin, by constant meditation? In what various aspects are You, O Lord, to be thought of by me?

vistarenatmano yogam
vibhutim ca janardana
bhuyah kathaya trptir hi
srnvato nasti me 'mrtam

18. Tell me again in detail, O Janardana, of Your yoga powers and attributes, for I am never satiated in hearing about You, for the more I hear the more I want to taste the nectar of Your words.

hanta te kathayisyami
divya hy atma-vibhutayah
pradhanyatah kuru-srestha
nasty anto vistarasya me

The Blessed Lord Said:

19. Very well! I shall now tell you My divine glories according to their prominence, O best of the Kurus; there is no end to the details of My manifestation.

aham atma gudakesa
sarva-bhutasaya-sthitah
aham adis ca madhyam ca
bhutanam anta eva ca

20. I am the Self, O Gudakesa [Arjuna], seated in the hearts of all beings. I am the beginning, the middle and also the end of all beings.

adityanam aham visnur
jyotisam ravir amsuman
maricir marutam asmi
naksatranam aham sasi

21. Of the Adityas I am Vishnu; of the luminaries, the radiant Sun; I am Marichi of the Maruts; of the asterisms [stars] the Moon am I.

vedanam sama-vedo 'smi
devanam asmi vasavah
indriyanam manas casmi
bhutanam asmi cetana

22. Of the Vedas I am the Sama; I am Vasava [Indra-the king of heaven] among the Devas [demigods]; of the senses I am the mind and among living beings I am consciousness.

rudranam sankaras casmi
vitteso yaksa-raksasam
vasunam pavakas casmi
meruh sikharinam aham

23. Of the Rudras I am Sankara [Lord Shiva], of the Yakshas and Rakshasas I am Kubera [Lord of wealth]. Of the Vasus I am Pavaka [fire-agni] and of the mountains I am Meru.

purodhasam ca mukhyam mam
viddhi partha brhaspatim
senaninam aham skandah
sarasam asmi sagarah

24. Of priests, O Partha [Arjuna], know Me to be the chief, Brihaspati; of generals I am Skanda and of bodies of water I am the ocean.

maharsinam bhrgur aham
giram asmy ekam aksaram
yajnanam japa-yajno 'smi
sthavaranam himalayah

25. Of the great Rishis I am Bhrigu; of utterances I am the monosyllable "Om". Of Yajnas I am japa-yajna [chanting the holy name] and of unmoving things, the Himalaya.

asvatthah sarva-vrksanam
devarsinam ca naradah
gandharvanam citrarathah
siddhanam kapilo munih

26. Of all the trees I am Asvattha [the banyan tree]; of Deva Rishis I am Narada; of the Gandharvas I am Chitraratha and of the Siddhas I am the Muni [sage] Kapila.

uccaihsravasam asvanam
viddhi mam amrtodbhavam
airavatam gajendranam
naranam ca naradhipam

27. Of horses, know Me to be the nectar born Ucchaisravas; of lordly elephants, Airavata and of men, the monarch.

ayudhanam aham vajram
dhenunam asmi kamadhuk
prajanas casmi kandarpah
sarpanam asmi vasukih

28. Of weapons I am the thunderbolt; of cows I am Kamadhuk; I am Kandarpa of the progenitors; and of serpents I am Vasuki.

anantas casmi naganam
varuno yadasam aham
pitrnam aryama casmi
yamah samyamatam aham

29. Of the many-hooded Nagas I am Ananta; of the water-deities I am Varuna. Of the Pitrus [departed ancestors] I am Aryama; of controllers I am Yama, the Lord of death.

prahladas casmi daityanam
kalah kalayatam aham
mrganam ca mrgendro 'ham
vainateyas ca paksina

30. Of the Daityas I am Prahlada and of reckoners I am Time; of beasts I am the lord of beasts [the lion], and Vainateya [Garuda] among the birds.

pavanah pavatam asmi
ramah sastra-bhrtam aham
jhasanam makaras casmi
srotasam asmi jahnavi

31. Of purifiers I am the wind; of the wielders of weapon I am Rama. Of fishes I am the shark, and of flowing rivers I am the Ganges.

sarganam adir antas ca
madhyam caivaham arjuna
adhyatma-vidya vidyanam
vadah pravadatam aham

32. Of created things I am the beginning and the end and also the middle, O Arjuna. Of the sciences I am the science of the Self; of those who debate [logicians] I am the reason [conclusive reason].

aksaranam a-karo 'smi
dvandvah samasikasya ca
aham evaksayah kalo
dhataham visvato-mukhah

33. Of letters I am the letter A, and of word-compounds I am the dual (Dvandva). I am verily the inexhaustible Time. I am the Dispenser [Brahma] facing everywhere.

mrtyuh sarva-haras caham
udbhavas ca bhavisyatam
kirtih srir vak ca narinam
smrtir medha dhrtih ksama

34. And I am the all-devouring Death. I am the prosperity of those who are to be prosperous; and of female qualities I am Fame, Fortune, Speech, Memory, Intelligence, Constancy and Forbearance.

brhat-sama tatha samnam
gayatri chandasam aham
masanam marga-sirso 'ham
rtunam kusumakarah

35. Of the Sama Veda hymns I am the Brihat-Sama; of metres [poetry] I am Gayatri. Of months I am Margasirsha [November-December] and of seasons I am the flowery spring.

dyutam chalayatam asmi
teias teiasvinam aham
jayo 'smi vyavasayo 'smi
sattvam sattvavatam aham

36. I am the gambling of the fraudulent, I am the splendor of the splendid; I am victory; I am effort; I am the goodness of the good.

vrsninam vasudevo 'smi
pandavanam dhananjayah
muninam apy aham vyasah
kavinam usana kavih

37. Of the Vrishnis I am Vasudeva; of the Pandavas, Dhananjaya [Arjuna]; of the sages I am Vyasa and of the seers I am Usana the seer.

dando damayatam asmi
nitir asmi jigisatam
maunam caivasmi guhyanam
jnanam jnanavatam aham

38. Of punishers I am the sceptre; of those that seek victory I am statesmanship; and of secrets I am also silence; and I am the wisdom of the wise.

yac capi sarva-bhutanam
bijam tad aham arjuna
na tad asti vina yat syan
maya bhutam caracaram

39. Furthermore, I am the generating seed of all beings, O Arjuna. There is no being, whether moving or unmoving that can exist without Me.

nanto 'sti mama divyanam
vibhutinam parantapa
esa tuddesatah prokto
vibhuter vistaro maya

40. There is no end of My divine manifestations, O harasser of foes; this is only a brief exposition by Me of the extent of My glories.

yad yad vibhutimat sattvam
srimad urjitam eva va
tat tad evavagaccha tvam
mama tejo-'msa-sambhavam

41. Whatever being there is glorious, prosperous or powerful, know that to have sprung but from a spark of My splendor.

atha va bahunaitena
kim jnatena tavarjuna
vistabhyaham idam krtsnam
ekamsena sthito jagat

42. But what need is there, O Arjuna, for this detailed knowledge? I stand supporting the whole universe with a single fragment of Myself.
